Kaohsiung is one of the six capitals in Taiwan. The most prosperous international city in southern Taiwan, Kaohsiung City, covers an area of 2,952 square kilometers, with a registered population of 2.773 million and ranking third in Taiwan. After the 20th century, it became the main political, economic, and transportation hub of southern Taiwan. Kaohsiung International Airport, the second largest international airport in Taiwan, Kaohsiung Port, the largest terminal in Taiwan, and the Central Committee of the Republic of China, the Marine Commission, are located here.

The economy of Kaohsiung City is focused on secondary and tertiary industries, and its output value accounts for the majority of the city’s total production. In 2016, Kaohsiung’s industrial and service industry produced a total of 355.78 billion yuan, second only to Taipei City, Taichung City and New Taipei City, ranking fourth in the country. The total industrial production is 2 trillion 538.2 billion TWD, second only to Taoyuan City, the second largest in the country; the total production of the service industry is1 trillion 60.6 billion TWD, which is the fourth in the nation after Taipei, Taichung and New Taipei. In the list of world-class cities announced by GaWC in 2018, Kaohsiung City is ranked as a “highly self-sufficient” city, ranking second in Taiwanese cities, second only to Taipei.
In the field of tourism, Kaohsiung City was named the fifth city among the “Top 20 Cities in the 2018 World’s Most Travelable Cities” by Lonely Planet.
