Transcontinental country in south-eastern Europe

Its population was 10.9 million in 2015. Athens is the capital and largest city of Greece, with Thessaloniki as the second largest.
Greece is strategically located at the crossroads of Europe, Asia and Africa.
It is located at the southern end of the Balkan Peninsula, bordered by Albania to the northwest, North Macedonia and Bulgaria to the north and Turkey to the northeast.

Greece has an integrated market economy as well as a public section that accounts for about half of the GDP.
Tourism is the mainstay of the industry and accounts for a large part (around 15%) of Greece’s GDP and foreign exchange earnings.
Greece is a major beneficiary of EU economic aid, which accounts for approximately 3.3% of total GDP, and the Greek economy has grown steadily over the last few years.
Climate

Greece has a Mediterranean type climate. It is characterised by dry summers and rainy winters, so that it hardly ever rains except in winter.
There is plenty of sunshine throughout the country, with an average of over 2,000 hours of sunshine per year in all regions.
The lowest temperatures occur in January and February and the highest in July and August, with an average temperature of 13°C in January and 33°C in July and August.
In winter, however, snowfall can occur in the mountains and even in Athens.

Medical care

Greece has a widespread medical system that is ranked among the best in the world.
In the 2000 World Health Organisation report, it was ranked 14th overall and 11th in terms of quality of service.
